Chinese Intensive Study
Chinese Intensive Study Program is composed of
two consecutive parts: the
closed-environment intensive
language training at International Ladder School of Language followed by the open-environment intensive language training on the other university campuses. The learners also have the option of attending the closed-environment intensive language training only. In order to meet the different needs of the learners, programs of various lengths are being offered as possible options: four-week program, eight-week program and 12-week program. We intend to keep the flexibility to suit the different needs of our customers.
I. A closed-environment training program will last for four weeks in general. Closed-environment training program is the program that makes it possible for earners to literally live in an all-Chinese language environment all day long, to enable our learners to practice communicating in Chinese based on what they have learned. It may very likely be the wish of any Chinese language learner to come to China and actually live in the real (and authentic) environment of the Chinese language so as to learn to speak Chinese easily and quickly. The closed-environment training program is to provide such a language environment that forces the learners to communicate in Chinese in daily life.
The closed-environment intensive training is characterized by longer hours of training, and intensity of courses and training methods. Learners have to follow the plan strictly laid out by the school. They should stay within the school boundary most of time during their period of study so that they can effectively utilize the language environment created in the school. Therefore, the period of time for closed-environment intensive training is being kept reasonably short. It is usually four weeks in length. However, for those who are determined to lay a firm foundation to master the Chinese language, they will find it worthwhile to undergo such training because what they will definitely benefit a great deal from what they have learned during those four weeks.
II. The open-environment intensive training program will last for four or eight weeks depending on the learners' initial levels of the Chinese language. This training will follow the closed-environment intensive training, and can be regarded as its continuation or extension. The teaching in two programs is integrated. In contrast to the closed-environment intensive training, the number of classes in the open-environment intensive training is smaller, and the learners are allowed more time at their own disposal. More emphasis will be placed on reading comprehension, while the training on listening and speaking continues.
Textbooks and Classes
For the closed-environment intensive training, there are classes every morning six days a week. 'One on one' language practice, language activities, reading and exercises will be arranged in afternoon and evening. One visit to a place of interest plus language practice will be arranged every Sunday.
For the open-environment intensive training programs, there are classes every morning five days a week. The afternoons will be used for 'one on one' language practice, practical language activities, readings and exercises. Evenings and weekends will be at the disposal of learners themselves.
The textbook adopted for the program is the newly published textbook entitled <Course of Intensive Chinese Language> that is sponsored by Beijing International Lad-der School of Language. The writers of the textbook are from Beijing University of Language and Culture (former Beijing Language Institute), which has been in existence for 40 years with rich experiences in Chinese language teaching and training for foreigners. Now there are more than 6,000 foreign students studying on its campus with majority of them learners of the Chinese language. These writers are well known professors and scholars in China in the field of Chinese language teaching and training for foreigners.
Expected Learning Results
After 4-8 weeks' intensive training, the learners will reach a level roughly equivalent to those who have been trained six months to one year through other methods in terms of listening and speaking abilities).
